Every day is a good day when Sam Evans is on set, behind the decks or on the other end of a SODA Shades zoom call. He has been an instrumental part of the team since before we sold a single pair and his creative vision, incredible energy and always good times attitude is hard to find and one we adore. A creative genius when it comes to filmmaking & photography, let us introduce you to Sammy Evans!
When did you first meet SODA?
I was in New Zealand shooting a tourism campaign and met Steph & Josh. I remember them pulling some samples at the time out of cardboard boxes and being like, ‘Try these!’. We all wore them throughout the shoot and loved the style & polarisation.
I didn’t meet G & Luke until the first SODA party and instantly had such an attraction to the brand.
And what did you think?
SODA embodies everything that I stand for. I work as a lifestyle filmmaker and photographer so to meet a brand that shares the same values of enjoying your friends and being in the outdoors is pretty much a dream for me.
You’re a creative director & videographer and have curated videos for some of the leading brands around the world. Key memory to date?
It would have to be working with Samsung and presenting one of the new product features on stage in front of a livestream audience of 20 million people in San Fransisco. I directed the launch video for their new product, too which was a really big moment for me that I won’t forget.
Place you can’t wait to go next?
Somewhere warm! We’ve been doing our best to shoot campaigns in VIC & NSW, but I can’t wait to go somewhere tropical like Bali or Fiji… Or Maldives, Bahamas. Anywhere with white sand and fresh cocktails!
You’re the man behind the lens of the SODA videos. What do you see?
I’m always looking for fun which is the essence of SODA. That’s what I always try to convey in our shoots. We don’t take ourselves too seriously so it’s important that we can embody that. We’re all about drawing together a great group of people and being completely inclusive so I’m always seeking out different perspectives and ways to represent that.
How important is the essence of fun when shooting content for SODA?
Everything we do at SODA is fun, naturally. It’s not forced, it’s centred around having a good time with your mates. It’s our top priority.
You’ve also been known to get behind the decks at a party or two. Any sneaky sets or music moments coming up for you & SODA?
I LOVE spinning for SODA shades. Especially as it’s my exact type of music choice I love. Day parties, house music, upbeat vibes. The crowd at SODA Shades parties are always so up for it and eager to get amongst it.
I have been meticulously planning my return to the decks for when we have our first SODA party back after ISO which I think is going to be one for the ages. I cannot wait to rip the roof off whatever place we end up having that party.
In terms of music, I’m also working on something pretty exciting with SODA Shades. We are currently developing and recording the first season of our brand new podcast called, The First Sip. It’s been a dream for a while – naturally throwing events, we are surrounded by so many talented musicians and we wanted to capture that element of SODA and our relationships and delve into their minds and their world. So many of them have so many amazing stories which we’d never know and so I’m very excited to get to know them better and share it with our SODA family.
What’s your go-to pair of SODAs?
For a very long time my go-to were the Sand Rileys. However, since Sonny launched, the Red & Fire shades have been on hire rotation whether you need to dress up or dress down.
